Elderly Pedestrian Struck and Killed in Staten Island Crosswalk

An 86-year-old man was fatally injured by a vehicle as he was walking in a crosswalk. According to a Streetsblog report, the Staten Island pedestrian accident occurred when a 25-year-old driver hit the man as he walked across Bay Street in the crosswalk and with the light. Officials said the driver was turning left from Canal Street onto Bay Street. The driver remained on the scene and got a summons. It is unclear if the driver was speeding or distracted at the time of the collision. The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Staten Island Pedestrian Accidents

The Stapleton section of Staten Island has been the location for a number of pedestrian accidents recently, according to research done by Streetsblog. In 2019, there were 148 reported crashes in just the 10-square-block area on the North Shore, which left five bicyclists, 14 pedestrians and 27 motorists injured.

There were 14 reported crashes on just the three blocks between Union and Thompson streets that year. On Staten Island, in 2019, there were 6,315 reported crashes – 17 per day – injuring 68 bicyclists, 376 pedestrians and 2,181 motorists, killing one bicyclist, five pedestrians and four drivers.

What Causes Pedestrian Accidents?

One of the most common ways in which pedestrian accidents occur in New York City is due to drivers who fail to yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks. New York law requires drivers to come to a full stop at a crosswalk, wait until pedestrians are safely across and only then proceed. Drivers may be cited or even arrested for failing to yield the right of way to pedestrians, especially when such a violation results in a major injury or crash.

Pedestrians have the right of way in all crosswalks and intersections with marked or unmarked crosswalks. The law also states that motorists turning right or left at an intersection should always look for pedestrians and yield the right of way to them. Pedestrians have the right of way at intersections, even if drivers have a green light.

A number of vehicle versus pedestrian collisions in New York City are caused by driver negligence (carelessness) or recklessness. Examples of driver negligence include driving over the speed limit or at an unsafe speed, driving while impaired, driving while distracted, running red lights or stop signs, making unsafe lane changes, making unsafe turns, etc.
