Do Not Drink and Drive this Holiday Season

drunk drivingThe holiday season is upon us and this is the time for parties and festive gatherings with family and friends. This is also the time of year when drunk driving collisions skyrocket nationwide. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2010 alone, 10,228 people nationwide were killed in DUI collisions. Of those 415 DUI deaths occurred in the second half of December.
There is absolutely no question that alcohol impairs the ability to drive. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) says alcohol interferes with a person’s coordination, driving skills and judgment. Drinking alcohol can also affect the brain for several hours.

Safety Tips for Party Hosts
If you are hosting a party:
• Don’t rely on caffeine to sober up the guests.
• Beer and wine can be just as intoxicating as hard liquor.
• Do not rely just on someone’s physical appearance to determine if he or she has had too much to drink.
• If someone has had too much to drink, take their keys away and offer a couch or bed so they can sober up and leave later.
If you are planning an office party:
• Arrange for discounted or complimentary rooms at the hotel where the party is held so employees don’t get behind the wheel while drunk.
• Hire a shuttle or limo service to give rides home.
• Promote non-drinking designated driver concepts in party invitations.
• Be sure your bartender has had training to prevent over-serving.
