The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has fined a construction company for numerous safety hazards. According to The Gloucester County Times, M & T Erection Enterprises Inc has recently been fined $41,580 following an inspection by the OSHA conducted in February 2011. The four violations stem from falling hazards that were either listed as repeat or serious violations.
The repeat violations involved a failure to provide a fall arrest system for workers operating in a man-lift basket 15-feet above the ground. Falling accidents are often the more devastating of New York construction accidents. There are a number of steps that construction companies and contractors can take to help prevent these types of serious injury accidents.Construction companies should provide safety devices and harnesses to anyone working above the ground. In circumstances where workers are particularly in danger of falling from high up, the employer should provide safety netting as a last resort safety precaution.
Falling accidents continue to be frequent and tragic. The 2009 Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries reported 700 construction accident fatalities resulting from falling accidents. Approximately half of those fatal fall accidents were construction accident related. Whenever a victim is killed in a construction accident, the victim’s family may seek financial compensation by filing for workers compensation benefits. Workers compensation is also available for surviving victims of fall accidents.
