Five cars collided in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn leaving five people injured. According to a CBS New York news report, eyewitnesses to this car accident said at least a couple of the vehicles involved in this collision appeared to be speeding. Surveillance video from inside a business nearby shows the instant a vehicle slammed into a parked car on Fifth Avenue near East 5th Street. Moments later, footage from a cellphone video shows the aftermath: Several crashed cars across 5th Avenue. Five people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Speeding Vehicles Witnessed
Police say a car was traveling southbound when two cars attempted to pass that vehicle. That’s when they collided and hit two more parked cars. A neighbor said he heard cars come “screaming” down the street and then a loud crash and shattering glass. The crash woke up one of the neighbors who saw someone pulling a person from the passenger side of one of the wrecked cars.
Police say they are still investigating the crash, but told CBS that they don’t suspect drag racing in this case. Video taken just minutes before the crash shows two cars speeding through the neighborhood and passing in the oncoming traffic lane in spite of the double yellow line. Some neighbors said speeding is a problem in the Park Slope neighborhood.
Speeding and Car Accidents
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2018, speeding killed 9,378 people. NHTSA reports that speeding has been a factor in about one-third of all car accident fatalities. In 2017 alone, for example, speeding contributed to 26% of all traffic fatalities.
Speed tends to affect safety – this is the case even when you are driving at the speed limit, but too fast for road conditions such as during bad weather, when a road is under repair or in an area at night, which is not well lit, etc. Speeding puts not just the drivers at risk, but also their passengers and others on the roadway.
If You Have Been Injured
There are a number of steps you can take to protect your legal rights if you have been injured in a car accident involving multiple vehicles and drivers. First and foremost, make sure you file a police report and obtain a copy of that report for your own records. Your New York car accident lawyer can also help you obtain this document, which often has crucial details and information about the incident.
Secure prompt medical attention and treatment for any injuries you may have suffered during the car accident. This helps ensure that your injuries and the treatment you received are well documented in addition to making sure that you are on the road to recovery. Try to get as much evidence from the scene as possible. This should include vehicle insurance details, driver’s license information, photos and videos from the accident scene, contact information for those involved and anyone who may have witnessed the crash, etc. If you are unable to collect this evidence because you are injured, it’s a good idea to enlist the help of a family member or friend. Please contact an experienced New York City car accident lawyer who can help you recover maximum compensation for your injuries, damages and losses.
