13 People Injured in New York Transit Van Rollover Accident

New York State Police are investigating a rollover crash involving a transit van, which they say took place in Ulster County early morning on Dec. 27. According to a report on Patch.com, the livery van was traveling north on I-87 near milepost marker 100 in the town of Saugerties when it left the roadway and rolled off the right shoulder. Police said there were 14 adults in the commercial van, including the driver. All 14 occupants were transported to Kingston Hospital or Northern Dutchess Hospital for evaluation. No one sustained life-threatening injuries in this van rollover crash, officials said.

The driver, who police identified as 65-year-old Michael Blue of Virginia, was not injured. Officials said after an initial investigation that there did not appear to be equipment violations. However, they did determine that the accident was caused by driver inattention. Blue was issued multiple traffic tickets including unreasonable and imprudent speed, lane violation and use of a portable electronic device while operating a motor vehicle. The investigation is still ongoing. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who were injured in this van rollover crash and we wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

What to Do If You’re Injured in a Commercial Van Accident

If you have been injured in an accident involving a commercial van, it’s important that you seek medical attention immediately, even if your injuries do not seem serious at the time. Some injuries may not be obvious right away, and having medical records is important for both your recovery and any future claims. Call emergency services so police can document the accident and create an official report.

Next, gather information at the scene. Exchange contact and insurance details with the driver, and note the name of the company that owns the van. Take photos of the vehicles, road conditions, visible injuries and any relevant traffic signs, etc. If there are witnesses, ask for their names and contact information. Your personal injury attorney can help gather these crucial details from the scene as well, particularly if you’ve been injured and need to get to the hospital.

Report the accident to your own insurance company as soon as you can, but do not give them or the commercial van’s insurer any recorded statements without first talking to your lawyer. Commercial accidents often involve multiple parties such as the driver, driver’s employer or vehicle owner, which can make the claims process more complex.

Keep all records related to the accident including medical bills, repair estimates and proof of missed school or work. Immediately consult an experienced personal injury attorney who can help protect your rights, explain your options and guide you through the legal process while you focus on healing.
