Data provided by the state of Ohio shows that more than 5,000 workers have suffered amputation injuries since 2005. According to an Associated Press news report, the statistics from the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation show that there have been 5,405 compensation claims for amputation injuries from 2005 to 2012. Safety officials say amputation injuries are often not life threatening, but they involve workers losing parts of their fingertips or thumbs. Often, amputation injuries can be severe, debilitating and catastrophic. Officials also say that unguarded equipment is one of the most common causes of severe physical wounds that result in amputation.

Amputation is one of the most severe and crippling types of injuries in the workplace, which often results in permanent disabilities for workers. According to the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), amputation injuries are widespread throughout many industries and involve a wide range of activities and equipment. Officials estimate that about 50 percent of all amputations occur in the manufacturing sector while the remaining amputations are distributed among industries such as construction, wholesale trade, retail, etc. Stationary and portable machines are the primary causes of the amputations.
