Struck-by Accidents Involving Excavators
Struck-by accidents involving excavator accidents often result in severe injuries or fatalities. These incidents occur when a worker is hit by an excavator’s moving parts such as the boom, bucket, or rotating upper structure. Factors contributing to these accidents include poor visibility from the cab, lack of communication between operators and ground workers and insufficient safety training.
Such accidents tend to happen in confined or high-traffic areas where multiple workers and machines operate simultaneously. Workers on foot are particularly at risk if they are within the excavator’s swing radius or blind spots. In many cases, the operator may not be aware of a person’s presence near the equipment until it is too late.
Preventive measures are essential to reduce these types of incidents. These include implementing exclusion zones, using spotters, installing cameras and proximity sensors on equipment and ensuring clear communication through radios or hand signals. Workers must be trained to recognize danger zones and wear high-visibility clothing. Struck-by accidents involving excavators are preventable with proper planning, situational awareness and adherence to safety protocols.
Common Types of Injuries
Excavator accidents can lead to a range of serious injuries. Common injuries include fractures, head trauma, crush injuries and internal organ damage. These typically occur when workers are struck by the excavator, caught between the machine and another object or involved in rollovers or equipment malfunctions.
Fractures are among the most frequent injuries, especially to the arms, legs and ribs, as a result of being hit or pinned by the excavator’s moving parts. Head and spinal injuries may occur if a worker falls from the equipment or is struck by the boom or bucket, often leading to long-term disabilities or even fatalities. Crush injuries can be particularly severe, sometimes requiring amputations, when limbs are caught between the machine and another surface.
Other types of injuries from excavator accidents include lacerations, burns from hydraulic fluid leaks or fires and hearing damage from prolonged exposure to loud machinery. In some cases, psychological trauma may follow a serious accident, especially for witnesses or survivors. Preventing these injuries requires strict adherence to safety procedures, proper training, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintaining clear communication between operators and ground personnel at all times.
Compensation for Workers and Families
Workers who have been injured in construction accidents can receive workers’ compensation benefits, which covers medical expenses and a portion of lost wages. In addition, workers may also be able to file a third-party claim against a negligent (careless) party other than the employer or co-employees for significant monetary damages and have two sources of compensation available for their losses.
Examples of third parties include, but are not limited to, general contractors, construction companies, sub-contractors, building owners, managing agents etc. In cases where a worker dies from injuries suffered on the job, surviving family members may seek death benefits through workers’ compensation and/or file a wrongful death claim against a third party.
