Upper East Side Hit and Run Pedestrian Crash Proves Fatal

An elderly man has died from the injuries he suffered in a pedestrian accident involving a hit-and-run driver. According to a report in The New York Daily News, the 84-year-old man was hit while crossing the street near his Upper East Side home. The man was in a crosswalk on First Avenue at East 58th Street when a northbound SUV slammed into him. The driver of the SUV did not stop and left the scene of the major injury collision.

Fatal Injuries

The elderly man was transported to an area hospital with a cut to his head and a fractured arm. He was initially expected to survive. However, his condition became worse shortly after and he died at the hospital, police said. A 68-year-old man from New Jersey has been arrested in connection with this hit-and-run crash.

Police said they used surveillance cameras to identify his license plate and track him down. The driver has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident. He could face additional or upgraded charges now that the victim has died. We offer our deepest condolences to this hit-and-run victim’s family.

Violation of Laws

Recently, we have seen a number of pedestrian versus vehicle collisions in New York City that involve vehicles striking pedestrians at crosswalks. In fact, these types of collisions are among the most common causes of major injury or fatal pedestrian accidents in New York City. New York law requires motorists to come to a full stop as they reach a crosswalk and only proceed when there are no pedestrians crossing the street or when it is safe to do so.

We also find that many of these “failure-to-yield” pedestrian accidents occur when vehicles are making a turn at an intersection. Factors in these types of accidents tend to involve impaired driving, distracted driving, recklessness or failure to obey the rules of the road such as stopping for a red light or a stop sign.

It is also illegal under New York laws to leave the scene of an injury or fatal collision. Drivers are required to stop immediately at the scene of the crash and wait for officials to arrive. Leaving the scene of an accident is a crime.
