Two people died from injuries sustained in separate pedestrian accidents in New York City. According to a Streetsblog report, a 45-year-old man was struck Feb. 17 as he tried to cross Atlantic Avenue at Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn. The man succumbed to his injuries on April 5. Police say a driver traveling east on the busy Atlantic Avenue ran down the pedestrian and left the scene even as the victim was lying in the roadway with trauma to his head and body. The investigation is ongoing in this case.
Fatal Pedestrian Accidents
The other fatal pedestrian accident occurred in Manhattan when a woman was struck and killed April 3 between Eighth and Ninth avenues near Columbus Circle. Officials say a driver who was leaving an underground parking garage on the block slammed into her with his minivan. This caused the woman to fall backwards and strike her head on the pavement.
While the woman was conscious and alert when emergency personnel arrived, she had already suffered severe head injuries. She was taken to an area hospital where she died. The driver remained at the scene, but has not been charged. Streetsblog says the woman was walking on a sidewalk when she was fatally struck. NYPD officials say they are still investigating this incident as well.
The location where the accident involving the male pedestrian occurred in Brooklyn is “notoriously dangerous,” according to the news report. There were 108 reported crashes in 2019 injuring three bicyclists, three pedestrians and 29 motorists in just the short stretch of Bedford between the merge with Rogers Avenue and Atlantic.
Negligent (Careless) Driving
New York has laws in place that require drivers to exercise care and caution especially with regard to pedestrians. Motorists are required to come to a full stop at crosswalks and proceed only when it is safe to do so. They are also required to be careful while backing out of a parking spot or driveway.
Negligent (careless) motorists cause a number of catastrophic or fatal pedestrian accidents in New York City. In such cases, pedestrians end up suffering major injuries such as head trauma, spinal cord damage, broken bones, internal organ injuries etc. Often, these injuries prove fatal.
