Two people have died from injuries suffered in pedestrian accidents after they were struck by drivers in separate incidents on the Upper East and Upper West sides of Manhattan on Jan. 24. According to Streetsblog.org, the first crash occurred at the intersection of Third Avenue and 76th Street on the Upper East Side.
Fatal Pedestrian Crashes
A pedestrian, identified as 51-year-old Udeshi Sundeep, was crossing Third
Avenue with the light and in the crosswalk when a vehicle struck her while making a left turn onto Third Avenue from 76th Street. The driver remained on the scene and was later charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian. Under New York City’s Administrative Code section 19-190(b), also known as the Right of Way law, motorists are required to yield the right of way to pedestrians.
The second fatal collision took place just before noon on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The victim, 43-year-old Beatriz Diaz was struck by a van that was turning left onto West 93rd Street from Amsterdam Avenue. The driver here has not yet been charged, Streetsblog reported, adding that the victim was dragged 20 feet down the block from the crosswalk where she was struck. We offer our deepest condolences to the families of both deceased victims for their tragic and heartbreaking loss.
Pedestrian Fatalities Soar in NYC
These deaths came just days after Mayor Eric Adams issued a public statement promising to punish drivers if they kill, injure or put pedestrians in harm’s way by failing to yield. Mayor Adams and the city’s senior police officials said in a news conference last week that they will take strong steps to enforce the city’s Right of Way law.
This move came after a number of pedestrians have been killed or severely injured in recent years by drivers who fail to yield the right of way to pedestrians, particularly at crosswalks and intersections. Last year, New York City saw the highest number of traffic fatalities since 2013, when 279 people were killed by vehicles. Pedestrian accidents have the potential to result in catastrophic or even fatal injuries. Some of the common injuries suffered in pedestrian accidents include, but are not limited to, head trauma, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, internal organ damage, limb amputations, etc.
