Head-on Collision in New York

Three people suffered serious injuries, including one person with potentially life-threatening injuries, after a head-on car accident in Henrietta, New York, the night of Feb. 17. According to a report in 13WHAM.com, a vehicle was traveling north on East River Road near Minett Drive when it crossed over the center line and collided head-on with a southbound vehicle. The report said Elisa Peterson, 39, a mother of four, is in guarded condition at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Her niece, Sky Streber told 13WHAM that Peterson was a passenger in the vehicle that had crossed over the center line and struck a pickup truck head-on, injuring a 61-year-old man from Lima who, according to the University of Rochester Medical Center, suffered internal injuries and a lower leg injury. The driver of the vehicle that crossed the center line, a 47-year-old man, was also hospitalized. Officials say he is expected to face charges. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has not released the names of the others involved in the collision. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who have been affected by this head-on collision.

What Makes Head-on Collisions So Dangerous?

Head-on crashes are among the deadliest types of road accidents as they involve a collision between two vehicles traveling in opposite directions — and at an excessive speed when added together. When a vehicle moving at 50 mph strikes another moving at 50 mph, the impact force on each of the vehicles is similar to them hitting a solid object at 100 mph. This sudden deceleration has a tremendous impact on vehicle occupants, even when seatbelts and airbags are being used. While the vehicles may absorb some of the force, their occupants can suffer severe trauma.

Common injuries in head-on collisions are often life-threatening. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) can occur when the victim’s head strikes the steering wheel, dashboard or window, or from rapid brain movement inside the skull. Spinal cord injuries may result from the intense force placed on the neck and back, potentially causing paralysis. Chest injuries, including broken ribs, collapsed lungs, and heart contusions are frequent because the chest typically absorbs much of the impact. Internal bleeding and organ damage — particularly to the liver, spleen, or lungs — are also common in these scenarios. Victims tend to suffer fractures to the legs, arms and pelvis due to crushing forces inside the vehicle.

Contacting an Experienced Lawyer

For over 54 years, our skilled accident attorneys have established a proven track record of helping injured victims get fair compensation for their losses. Our law firm recently recovered $5,600,000 for a bicyclist who was hit by a van, and $2,550,000 for another victim of a truck accident, and $3,000,000 for a pedestrian who was hit by a car, and $2,000,000 in a hit-and-run accident, and the full $1,000,000 insurance policy for a pedestrian who was hit by a truck, and $4,625,000 for a driver who was in a car and was hit by a van, and $2,500,000 for a man who fell through an improperly secured hole. We also recovered $1,500,000 for a lady who was hurt by a bus, although there was only a 1 million dollar insurance policy and we got $500,000 above that insurance policy.

We also obtained $295,000 out of a $300,000 insurance policy in compensation for the victim of a bicycle dooring accident (where a car door opens into the path of a bicyclist). One of our clients obtained a verdict for $43,940,000 and another of our clients got a verdict for $23,500,000, both in medical malpractice cases.
