Speeding is a Problem at Dangerous New York City Intersection

New York police are looking into what changes can be made to a dangerous intersection in the city that sees several car accidents and an average of four motor vehicle occupant injuries a year. According to the New York Times, the intersection at Hall Street and Park Avenue marks a hazardous spot for motorists. Some say it is dangerous because people speed on Park Avenue, which has a speed limit of 30 mph. Others say Hall Street, which is a one-way street, is the problem. Hall Street has stop signs and Park Avenue doesn’t, which can lead to some drivers becoming impatient with waiting and misjudging the amount of time they have to cross the road.
Police are looking into possible remedies for this intersection including creating a no-parking zone at the intersection so drivers can see oncoming traffic better. Residents who live near this dangerous intersection suggest to authorities that lights, crosswalks, or other traffic mediation measures be put in place for safety. One of the residents in the area said he has seen cars go out of control and smash through the fence of his yard. In one instance, a resident, who was nearly hit by a vehicle, commented that the Department of Transportation must admit this intersection needs better traffic controls.
According to the New York Department of Vehicles (DMV), there were more than 323,000 accidents in the state in 2007. Of these, 1,220 were fatal and 139,000 resulted in injury accidents.
Government agencies are required to ensure all roadways, highways, and expressways are safe for motorists. This includes making sure there is proper lighting, signage and road markings. All roadways and intersections should also have clear visibility, free of obstructions and foliage that may obscure road signs. If it is found the agency responsible for maintaining the roadway didn’t take any action to remedy a road safety issue, despite having known about the hazards, that agency could be held liable for any injuries subsequently caused.
