Police are investigating a pedestrian accident in Queens, which left a 67-year-old woman dead. According to an NBC New York news report, the woman was found on Eliot Avenue in Middle Village after a sedan and a city bus struck her. Officials say neither driver remained at the scene.
Ongoing Investigation
Police say the woman was in the roadway in front of 69-82 Elliot Avenue when the
sedan first knocked her down. She was then run over by the city bus. It is not clear how much time passed before the bus ran her over.
Detectives are looking for any surveillance video that captured images of the sedan and the bus, both of which left the scene. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Transit Authority said the transit agency is fully cooperating with the NYPD’s investigation into this fatal collision. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family members of the deceased pedestrian.
Hit-and-Run Crashes
Leaving the scene of an injury or fatal car accident is illegal under New York law. Motorists are required to stop, remain at the scene and render aid to injured victims. In a hit-and-run crash, injured victims and their families suffer not only emotionally, but also financially as they deal with sudden expenses such as medical bills, loss of income and funeral preparations. There are several parties that can be held financially responsible in hit-and-run cases.
The driver and vehicle owner are both responsible parties even if the owner was not driving when the accident occurred. If the driver was on the job and/or operating a company vehicle at the time, his or her employer can also be held liable. When the driver is apprehended in a hit-and-run case and negligence (carelessness) is proven, victims can seek compensation for their losses.
If a hit-and-run driver has injured you, please remember that you can also seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy (even though the driver has not been identified) or through a quasi-state agency if there is no motor vehicle in the victim’s household.
