Police Arrest Drivers in Two Separate Fatal Queens Bicycle Accidents

bicyclist accident attorneyPolice have arrested two drivers who were involved in separate fatal bicycle accidents in Queens. According to the New York Daily News, Yakup Mace, 46, was charged in the latest incident, which left 47-year-old Jorge Galicia dead. Police said the victim was riding a bicycle near the corner of 54th Avenue and Maurice Avenue in Maspeth on Feb. 22 when he was involved in a collision with a white box truck.

Charges Filed in Both Cases

The victim suffered severe trauma and was rushed to a local hospital, but succumbed to his injuries. Mace, who was driving the box truck, remained on the scene, but was hit with a number of charges including false report of an incident, tampering with physical evidence, reckless driving and failure to yield to a pedestrian or bicyclist, police said. He is also facing one charge of making an illegal U-turn.

Police also arrested 27-year-old Kyle Schreiber who they say was driving a tractor-trailer Dec. 28 that struck 81-year-old Peter Seo as he rode an e-bike. The fatal accident occurred at Parsons and Northern Boulevard in Queens. Seo was riding eastbound on Northern Boulevard in the left turning lane in Flushing when he made a turn to head west on the boulevard, police said. As he made the U-turn, Seo collided with the tractor-trailer. Schreiber kept driving and the victim died at the scene, officials said. Schreiber was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

Common Causes of Bicycle Accidents

Here are some of the most common causes of bicycle accidents:

  • Driver inattention: One of the leading causes of bicycle accidents is driver inattention or distraction. Drivers failing to see bicyclists, especially at intersections or while making turns, can cause collisions.
  • Failure to yield: Motorists may fail to yield the right of way when required, leading to accidents at intersections, crosswalks, or when merging.
  • Unsafe passing: Drivers passing cyclists too closely without providing sufficient space can cause accidents, especially if the cyclist is forced off the road or loses balance.
  • Poor road conditions: Uneven road surfaces, potholes, gravel, or debris can cause cyclists to lose control and crash.
  • Impaired driving: Alcohol or drug-impaired driving significantly increases the risk of accidents involving bicyclists.
  • Speeding: Excessive speed by motorists can reduce reaction time and increase the severity of bicycle collisions.
