A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a bicyclist in Central Park. According to a CBS New York report, the bicycle versus pedestrian accident occurred on West Drive in Central Park near 62nd Street. The pedestrian, a woman in her 50s, was hospitalized with critical injuries at a local hospital and later died. The bicyclist suffered relatively minor injuries. No charges or citations were reported.
CBS reported that the location where this fatal collision occurred is a “problem spot.” Both bicyclists and pedestrians who talked to the news channel agreed that it can be a dangerous spot. They say that location draws a variety of traffic including bicyclists who travel at a high rate of speed. Police from the Central Park precinct have apparently been warning bicyclists recently to slow down and for pedestrians to be vigilant.
The Problem of High Speed Biking
According to media reports, the bicyclist in this particular case, was reportedly riding a road bike and traveling at a high speed. The woman was knocked to the ground with an impact that left her brain-dead. The victim later died. This is apparently the second fatal bike-pedestrian crash in the city in just two months and the second to happen in Central Park.
In August, a runner was hit by a teen on a bike who had swerved to avoid a pedicab. After this most recent accident, even bicycling enthusiasts have criticized the high-speed bike racing culture that is taking over Central Park. The bicyclist in the most recent crash was apparently tracking his time using a popular app called Strava. Safety advocacy groups are calling for bicyclists to stop racing in public places with high foot traffic such as Central Park.
