Pain Makes Some Activities More Challenging for Children with Cerebral Palsy

The presence of pain in children with cerebral palsy can make motor skill activities even more challenging for them, a research letter published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Network Open states. According to an article on Healio.com, many children with cerebral palsy experience the secondary condition of pain, which is problematic because children with this condition already face barriers to participation in motor skill activities.

What Researchers Found

Researchers said motor performance in activities of daily living among children with cerebral palsy is significantly lower than that among their peers. Because of the potential effect of pain for children with cerebral palsy, researchers said they sought to examine the association between pain and activities requiring motor skill performance such as difficulty while dressing or bathing and participation in sports. They looked at a nationally representative sample of U.S. children with cerebral palsy.

They analyzed data from the 2017 to 2018 National Survey of Children’s Health, specifically responses from 151 patients aged 6 to 17 years with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy and 9,177 typically developing children. Study data showed that children with cerebral palsy were much more likely to experience difficulties bathing or dressing. Further, less than half of the children with cerebral palsy were likely to participate in a sports activity.

When it came to chronic pain, it was 4.5 times more prevalent in children with cerebral palsy. Researchers also noted that children with cerebral palsy and pain were three times more likely to have dressing or bathing difficulty compared with children with cerebral palsy without pain. Also, children with cerebral palsy and pain were 60% less likely to participate in sports.

Researchers determined although cerebral palsy is a complicated disorder and that challenges with motor skills are common among these children, pain is also a notable contributing factor, which makes these challenges worse. Researchers suggested that identifying and treating pain in children with cerebral palsy may improve their participation in motor skill activities.
