The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited the New York ice cream company for multiple work safety violations. According to WIVB News, Perry’s Ice Cream in Akron faces a total of $51,000 in penalties. One of the most serious violations at the Akron location involves deficiencies in ammonia processing equipment and a failure to provide adequate training. There was also unapproved wiring and lack of a system to prevent equipment and devices from starting up during maintenance.
All employers must provide a reasonably safe work environment for their employees and visitors. Part of this obligation involves making sure that dangerous and toxic materials are handled properly. Ammonia is a particularly dangerous chemical that is found in many workplaces. It is crucial that employers make sure that these hazardous substances are handled properly, and that employees receive the required job and safety training.
Ammonia poisoning can occur whenever someone swallows or touches ammonia. Inhaling ammonia when it is mixed with other toxic chemicals such as bleach, for example, can be lethal. Symptoms include severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate, shock, an altered mental state, fever, burns and throat pain. Victims of dangerous workplaces may pursue financial compensation for their losses by filing for workers compensation benefits. Damages such as medical bills and lost wages are often covered by workers compensation claim. However, workers compensation laws can be complex.
