A disturbing video shows the moment when an SUV driver slammed into a Bronx Sanitation worker, pinning him against his garbage truck and leaving him with critical injuries, including two broken legs. According to a report in the New York Post, Ahmad Ladson, 32, was behind his truck on Colgate Avenue near Watson Avenue in Soundview the morning of Dec. 16, when an SUV careened into him.
Critical Injuries Reported
Ladson became wedged between the two vehicles and rolled onto the ground next to his truck, unable to get up, the Post reported based on what the video showed. The driver of the SUV, identified by police only as a 40-year-old woman, exited the vehicle and came to the aid of the worker, who was badly injured. A second person who appeared to be a Sanitation worker also came to Ladson’s aid. He suffered compound fractures to both of his legs and was rushed to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition, police said.
The driver remained at the scene and was also taken to the hospital for a panic attack, the Post reported. She is not facing charges yet pending the official investigation. Crowdfunding efforts have been initiated to help Ladson with medical expenses. The Post reports that he is a husband and father of three with about two years of service on the job. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured worker and we wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
The Impact of Crush Injuries
Crush injuries to bones in workplace accidents can have severe and life-altering consequences. These injuries occur when a heavy object, machinery or a vehicle compresses the worker’s body, often affecting the limbs, hands, feet or other bones. The severity of the injury depends on the force, duration of compression, and the body part involved.
Crush injuries tend to result in complex fractures, including comminuted fractures where the bone shatters into multiple pieces. Muscles, blood vessels and nerves surrounding the bone can be severely damaged, leading to internal bleeding and loss of function. The pressure from the crush injury may restrict blood flow, causing intense pain and potentially leading to tissue death if untreated.
Injured workers also suffer long-term consequences. Severe fractures may require surgical intervention, such as bone fixation or joint replacement, which can lead to limited mobility or chronic pain. In extreme cases, severe tissue damage or infection might necessitate the removal of the affected limb. Persistent pain and reduced function can limit an injured worker’s ability to perform future tasks. In some cases, such injuries can lead to permanent disability.
In addition, the trauma of a workplace accident can cause emotional distress, including anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Workers may also experience financial strain due to medical bills and loss of income.
Compensation for Injured Workers
An injured worker in New York City may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits, regardless of who was at fault for the accident. Workers’ compensation provides medical treatment, a little wage replacement, and other benefits to employees who suffer work-related injuries or illnesses.
In addition, workers may also be able to file a third-party claim against a negligent (careless) party other than the employer or co-employees for significant monetary damages and have two sources of compensation available for their losses. Examples of third parties include, but are not limited to, general contractors, construction companies, sub-contractors, building owners, managing agents, drivers of other vehicles, etc. In cases where a worker dies from injuries suffered on the job, surviving family members may seek death benefits through workers’ compensation and/or file a wrongful death claim against a third party who may be held liable for the fatal incident.
