New York Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Pedestrian AccidentThe New York Department Motor Vehicles compiles data from all New York auto accidents. This allows the authorities to follow the trends in injury accidents from year to year. It is important for New Yorkers to understand just how prevalent pedestrian accidents are so that they are equipped with the knowledge to prevent such tragedies. The following statistics are from the New York DMV 2009 Pedestrian Summary.
There were 15,682 New York accidents involving pedestrians in the year 2009. In those accidents, 307 pedestrians and one driver were killed. Also, 15,321 pedestrians, 407 drivers and 138 passengers were injured throughout New York in pedestrian-related car accidents. In addition, 59 percent of all New York pedestrian accidents resulted in minor injuries. Almost half of all pedestrian accidents involved a moderate, serious or fatal injury. In fact, almost 20 percent of all pedestrian accidents resulted in a moderate injury and 12.5 percent involved a serious injury.
Perhaps the best way to use statistics to help prevent future accidents is to have an understanding of what factors led to the most crashes. The most common cause of all New York pedestrian accidents was driver inattention or distraction (2,861 crashes). Pedestrians who are aware of this fact may be less likely to assume that a driver will be paying attention to who has the right-of-way. Other common causes of New York pedestrian accidents included a failure to yield the right-of-way (2,136), backing up unsafely (674), limited visibility (449) and alcohol impairment (372). It is also important to recognize that pedestrians were at least partially at fault for 2,690 of the New York collisions.
