A 79-year-old driver crashed into two cars in the Bronx before striking a light pole, killing his passenger and injuring himself and six others. According to a report in the New York Daily News, Stella Nyarko-Dei, 71, was in the back seat of a vehicle that was heading west on Bartow Avenue in Co-Op City when its driver crashed into two other vehicles before colliding with a light pole.
Fatality and Injuries
The impact sent one of the vehicles careening into an unoccupied car. In total eight people, including the drivers and their passengers were involved. Medics rushed Stella Nyarko-Dei and a 69-year-old woman riding in the same car’s front passenger seat to Jacobi Medical Center. Nyarko-Dei died from her injuries.
One other driver and a 11-year-old passenger were also rushed to the same hospital as were another driver and two of her passengers, police said. Those who survived this car accident were all reported to be in stable condition and are expected to recover, officials said. The cause of the car accident is under investigation. No arrests were reported. Nyarko-Dei reportedly lived in the Bronx, less than a mile from where the crash occurred.
What to Do After a Multi-Car Crash
Being involved in a multi-car accident can be overwhelming, but taking the right steps immediately after the crash can protect your health and your legal rights. First, check yourself and others for injuries. Call 911 to report the accident and request medical assistance if needed. If it is safe to do so, move your vehicle out of traffic to prevent further collisions. Remain at the scene and cooperate with police officers by providing accurate information without admitting fault, as liability in multi-car accidents can be complicated and determined later through investigation.
Next, gather as much evidence as possible. Take photos of all vehicles, damage, road conditions, and any visible injuries. Exchange information with other drivers, including names, contact details, insurance and vehicle registration. If there are witnesses, get their contact information as well. Immediately contact an experienced personal injury attorney, especially if you have sustained injuries.
What Are Passengers’ Rights
Passengers involved in car accidents have important legal rights, regardless of which driver was at fault. As a passenger, you are generally considered a “third party,” meaning you are not responsible for causing the accident and have the right to pursue compensation for your injuries. You can file a claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance policy, whether that driver was operating your vehicle or another involved vehicle. In some cases, if multiple drivers share responsibility, you may have the right to file claims against multiple insurance companies to maximize your recovery.
In addition to covering medical expenses, passengers may be entitled to compensation for lost wages, pain and suffering and other damages. It is important to seek medical attention immediately after the accident.
