An MTA bus driver has been suspended after a Queens pedestrian accident, which killed 31-year-old Amesha Mishael Keys. According to a news report in the Queens Chronicle, Keys was killed the night of Aug. 6 when she was struck by the MTA bus, which had turned left from Baisley Boulevard to Bedell Street in Rochdale. Emergency personnel rushed the victim to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The bus operator, identified as Michele Washington, left the scene, based on the news report. No arrests have been made at this time. Washington was operating the Q85 bus at the time of this fatal collision, officials said. Washington, who joined NYC Transit in April 2022, has been withheld from duty pending dismissal as the investigation into the collision continues, MTA officials said. We offer our deepest condolences to the family of Amesha Mishael Keys for their tragic loss. They will be in our thoughts and prayers.
Pedestrian Versus Bus Accidents in NYC
Pedestrian versus transit bus accidents in New York City often result in catastrophic injuries or fatalities due to the size and weight of buses, making safety a critical concern. New York City’s streets are busy with millions of pedestrians and hundreds of MTA buses operating daily. This constant interaction increases the likelihood of accidents. Several factors contribute to these incidents:
- Blind spots: Buses have significant blind spots, particularly on the sides and rear. Pedestrians crossing in these areas may not be visible to the bus driver. Negligent or careless drivers who don’t pay attention to pedestrians especially while making a turn can pose a severe crash risk.
- Turning buses: A common scenario involves buses making turns at intersections. Pedestrians, often in the crosswalk, may not be seen by the bus driver, leading to collisions.
- Driver error or negligence(carelessness): Fatigue, distractions, or misjudgment by bus drivers can also lead to these types of accidents.
When a pedestrian is struck by an MTA bus, the consequences are often severe due to the bus’s size. Injuries can range from broken bones to life-threatening conditions, and fatalities are not uncommon. The psychological impact on both victims and families is profound, often leading to long-term trauma.
Injuries and Compensation
Traffic accidents have the potential to result in catastrophic injuries and fatalities. Injured bus accident victims can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, lost future income, permanent injuries, etc.
Pedestrian accident victims and their families should remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one-million-dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
