Moped Rider Struck and Killed by Bus in Downtown Brooklyn

Moped Accident AttorneyA 74-year-old man was fatally injured in a bus collision as he was riding a moped in Downtown Brooklyn, according to AMNY.com. Police said the deadly bus accident occurred when the man was riding an electric moped south on Jay Street the night of Nov. 6 and the 66-year-old driver of a Prevost coach bus going in the same direction attempted to turn right on Tillary Street. As the bus was making the turn, it hit the moped. The rider fell off the vehicle and was run over by the bus. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased victim here for their loss.

Traffic Safety is an Ongoing Issue

The bus driver remained at the scene and has not been arrested pending an ongoing investigation. There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the collision, officials said. According to NYC Crash Mapper, the intersection of Jay and Tillary, which is a major intersection in Downtown Brooklyn and close to the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge, has seen 123 traffic accident injuries in the past 10 years involving 56 motorists, 39 cyclists and 28 pedestrians.

In 2024 alone, there have been 221 traffic fatalities in New York City, which is only slightly down from 226 traffic accident deaths during the same time last year. That includes 65 people killed on “motorized two-wheel” vehicles including electric scooters and mopeds, the numbers show.

Moped Accidents and Driver Carelessness

Moped accidents are a growing concern, especially in urban areas like New York City where these vehicles are popular for their affordability and maneuverability. However, their small size and limited protection make riders highly vulnerable to serious injuries. Driver negligence (carelessness) often plays a significant role in moped collisions with cars, buses and trucks.

Common forms of negligence (carelessness) include distracted driving, speeding, failing to yield the right of way and driving under the influence. For example, a car driver distracted by a phone might fail to notice a moped in their blind spot, resulting in a side-impact collision. Similarly, drivers making abrupt turns or lane changes without checking mirrors or signaling can put moped riders at risk. Moped operators’ visibility and right of way are often compromised by negligent (careless) drivers. The consequences can be devastating, leading to fractures, head injuries, or even fatalities for the victims.
