Manhattan Pedestrian Critically Injured in Crosswalk Collision

A 12-year-old girl suffered major injuries in a pedestrian accident after a speeding driver struck her as she was walking in a crosswalk in Upper Manhattan. According to news reports, the 40-year-old driver of a 2016 Mercedes was heading southbound on Audubon Avenue the afternoon of March 10 when he struck the girl at the intersection of West 170th Street as the girl was crossing Audubon.

Pedestrian Crash Caught on Video

Officials said she suffered head trauma and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The driver remained at the scene and was not charged. Police said the investigation is ongoing. Horrific surveillance footage of the collision obtained by the New York Post shows the victim walking up to the crosswalk as a van parked to her left appears to obstruct her view. Seconds later, the girl attempts to cross in the crosswalk, but is struck by the Mercedes.

The video shows the victim being thrown into the air and collapsing in a heap about 15 feet away. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but officials said she is expected to survive. Our thoughts and prayers are with this young pedestrian accident victim and we wish her the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Dangerous Streets

Streetsblog notes that the driver can be seen speeding dangerously on the narrow, two-way road that became even narrower because of a double-parked truck. This incident is just the latest example of the pedestrian accident crisis facing New York City. So far, this year alone, 25 pedestrians have lost their lives in the city — up from 20 over the same period last year. Pedestrian accident injuries are also up significantly over the first two months of the year, compared to the same period last year, Streetsblog reports.

So far this year, there have been 138 reported crashes in just the small zone between the George Washington Bridge and West 155th Street, causing injuries to six bicyclists, 19 pedestrians and 29 motorists, according to city statistics. Streetsblog reports that last year, there were 31 reported crashes on just the half-mile section of Audubon between 178th and 168th streets, injuring two cyclists, one pedestrian and 20 motorists.
