John Hannon, 25, of Patchogue, was killed in a motorcycle accident in Long
Island after he was struck by a vehicle that was making a left turn at a street intersection. According to a news report in the Daily Voice, Hannon was riding a motorcycle westbound on Veterans Memorial Highway when an eastbound pickup truck made a left turn onto Arctic Avenue before hitting him.
Hannon was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the pickup truck, a 54-year-old man who was alone in the vehicle, was transported to a hospital for treatment of what were said to be minor injuries. We offer our deepest condolences to the family of John Hannon for their tragic loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Left-Turn Motorcycle Accidents
A significant number of major injury or fatal motorcycle accidents involve drivers who make left turns at intersections. Such accidents typically occur because the drivers were not paying attention to oncoming traffic. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the most common motorcycle accident involves another vehicle’s driver who violates a motorcycle’s right-of-way at an intersection, usually by turning left in front of the motorcycle.
Also, these types of accidents occur when a motorcyclist is traveling straight through an intersection, passing the car in question or traveling in the left lane and is cut off by a car that changes lanes without signaling or without warning. Left-turn motorcycle accidents tend to be caused by drivers who are attempting to beat oncoming traffic and make a left or U-turn when it is not safe to do so. Drivers who are traveling at an excessive rate of speed or unsafe speed also contribute to such catastrophic accidents. Another factor here is a motorist who runs a red light. Often times, motorists assume that they have enough time to make the left turn as the light is changing from yellow to red.
Speeding and other negligent (careless) actions are cited in many New York City car accidents and frequently result in major injuries, long-term disabilities as well as fatalities. Drivers who speed, or drive while distracted and/or impaired, drivers who fail to yield the right of way or run red lights and stop signs pose a definite danger to other road users. Such drivers cause not just vehicle-related accidents, but also pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents.
