Man Killed in Bronx Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident

hit and run car accident attorneyWilbert de Jesus Cordero, 22, was fatally injured in a Bronx pedestrian accident after he was hit by two cars going opposite directions. According to an NBC New York news report, Cordero was walking through an intersection in the Bronx in the Parkchester section early morning on Feb. 4 when he was struck. The driver of a vehicle going south on White Plains Road struck Cordero throwing him to the northbound lane. There, a second driver ran him over. Police said that second driver stopped and then drove away before deciding to return to the scene.

Officers arrested 25-year-old Adam Vilajeti on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and driving while intoxicated. The first driver who struck Cordero remained at the scene and cooperated with police, officials said. Cordero was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. According to NBC, Cordero recently came to the Bronx from the Dominican Republic and worked at a local store. He was reportedly walking home when he was fatally struck. We offer our deepest condolences to his family members.

Pedestrian Accidents Involving Hit-and-Run Drivers

Hit-and-run pedestrian accidents occur when a driver strikes a pedestrian and flees the scene without stopping to render aid or provide contact information. Common reasons for hit-and-run accidents include driver impairment, driving without a valid license or insurance, and fear of legal consequences.

These accidents often result in severe injuries or fatalities for pedestrians and the lack of immediate medical attention can worsen the condition of the victim. Hit-and-run accidents also pose challenges for law enforcement in identifying and apprehending the responsible driver, particularly if there are no witnesses or surveillance footage available. Leaving the scene of an accident is illegal in New York and all U.S. states.

Compensation for Victims and Families

In a hit-and-run collision, the driver and vehicle owner are both responsible parties even if the owner was not driving when the accident occurred. If the driver was on the job and/or operating a company vehicle at the time, his or her employer can also be held liable. When the driver is apprehended in a hit-and-run case, he or she can be held financially liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused.

Such drivers can be held financially responsible whether or not they are arrested and/or charged. If a hit-and-run driver has injured you, please remember that you can seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy (even though the driver has not been identified) or through a quasi-state agency if there is no motor vehicle in the victim’s household. You should consult a personal injury lawyer immediately to protect your rights.

Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, lost future income, etc.

Pedestrian accident victims and their families should also remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one-million-dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
