Thirteen people were injured in a major multi-vehicle car accident in Queens the morning of Dec. 2. According to ABC7 New York, officials said the crash involved several vehicles on the Long Island Expressway’s eastbound lanes near Little Neck Parkway (Exit 32) in Douglaston. A number of FDNY firefighters and EMS units responded to the scene with all eastbound lanes shut down at Marathon Parkway.
Video circulated online showed several trucks involved in the crash and at least one rig appeared to have severe front-end damage, ABC7 reported. The 13 victims were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Other media reports stated that none of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries. The extent of their injuries is not known. The cause of this multi-vehicle accident is still under investigation. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who were affected by this incident.
Factors leading to Multi-Vehicle Collisions
Multi-vehicle accidents encompass various scenarios and often occur due to irresponsible or reckless behavior that was exhibited by one or more of the drivers involved. Several common causes attributed to driver negligence (carelessness) in such accidents include:
Distracted driving: Engaging in activities like texting, talking on the phone, eating, or using infotainment systems while driving diverts attention from the road. A distracted driver may fail to notice slowed or stopped traffic ahead, causing a rear-end collision and initiating a chain reaction.
Speeding: Driving above the posted speed limit or too fast for road conditions reduces a driver’s ability to stop or maneuver quickly. Speeding increases the severity of collisions and can cause a cascade of crashes if a high-speed vehicle rear-ends or loses control and hits other vehicles.
Tailgating: Following other vehicles too closely decreases the reaction time available if the front vehicle stops suddenly. When a tailgating driver fails to maintain a safe distance, it can lead to a chain of rear-end collisions involving multiple vehicles.
Failure to yield the right of way: Ignoring traffic signs, signals, or failing to yield when necessary can lead to collisions at intersections or merge points. A single failure to yield can trigger a series of crashes involving multiple vehicles.
Impaired driving: Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs significantly impairs judgment, coordination, and reaction times, increasing the likelihood of causing a collision that involves multiple vehicles.
