Motorcycle accidentFour people, including a bicyclist and two pedestrians, were injured in a motorcycle accident after an out-of-control motorcycle crashed into them on a Yonkers sidewalk. According to a report in The Journal News, the motorcyclist, a 31-year-old man, was also injured. Police say the man lost control of his motorcycle and jumped a curb hitting the three victims.
The bicyclist, a 33-year-old Yonkers man, suffered major head and facial injuries. One injured pedestrian, 30, sustained neck and shoulder injuries, while another pedestrian, 26, suffered a knee injury. All victims were transported to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries. The motorcyclist was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Accidents Involving Pedestrians
There were 16,357 accidents involving pedestrians reported in New York State in 2010, according to the Department of Motor Vehicle’s statistics. In those auto accidents, 309 people were killed and 16,023 were injured. Also, in 2010, of those pedestrians who were injured, 1,898 suffered serious injuries, 3,000 sustained moderate injuries and 9,498 suffered minor injuries.
Injuries Suffered in Pedestrian Accidents
As seen in this case, pedestrians and bicyclists are often likely to suffer major injuries because they have very little in terms of protection from the striking vehicle. Common injuries suffered in such accidents include brain injuries, spinal cord damage, broken bones, knee injuries, neck and back injuries and internal organ damage. Most of these victims require hospitalization, possible surgery, extensive rehabilitation and physical therapy. The costs can add up very quickly. When negligence is involved, the at-fault party can be held liable for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost earnings and benefits, hospitalization, permanent injuries, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
