GE Dishwashers Recalled for Fire Hazard

General Electric has announced a defective product recall for approximately 1.3 million dishwashers due to a potential fire hazard. According to a Consumer Reports article, GE is recalling the GE Adora, GE Eterna, GE Profile, and Hotpoint dishwashers sold between March 2006 and August 2009. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that GE has already received 15 reports of heating element failures. These reported incidents resulted in seven fires including three cases of extensive property damage. No injuries have yet been linked to this product defect.
According to the CPSC, GE has had to issue a number of safety recalls on their dishwashing units over the years. In October 2010, for example, 174,000 GE Profile and GE Monogram Dishwashers were recalled for a fire hazard. That recall was not issued until after five fires were reported. In May 2007, GE recalled 2.5 million units for having defective parts that allowed liquid to leak on the internal wiring. GE received 191 reports of overheated wiring including 56 reports of property damage and 12 reports of fires.
The Danger of Defective Appliances
Defective products and appliances that use electricity have the potential to cause significant fire damage, burn injuries and smoke inhalation injuries. In such cases, the resulting damages can mean significant medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, and treatment costs to the victims. When a faulty product leads to injuries, its manufacturer can be held liable for the damages.
