Fatal Brooklyn Pedestrian Accident Involves DWI

A 32-year-old woman was fatally injured in a pedestrian accident in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn after being hit by a New Jersey man who officials say was driving impaired. According to a report on Gothamist.com, the woman was crossing Graham Avenue at Broadway in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by the 47-year-old driver who was going westbound on Broadway and made a right onto Graham.

The vehicle dragged the woman about 77 feet before the driver stopped, police said. The victim was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. The driver was charged with driving while impaired and manslaughter. This is the latest in a number of fatal vehicle versus pedestrian collisions in Brooklyn just over the last week. Earlier, a Red Hook man was killed by a hit-and-run driver at Hamilton Avenue and Court Street while a 6-year-old boy was struck and killed by a school bus in South Williamsburg.

City Streets More Dangerous During Pandemic

Several recent studies have shown that the coronavirus pandemic has made city streets more dangerous not just for pedestrians, but everyone. Traffic statistics from 2020 show that road deaths in general have shot up. Through Dec. 16, 2020, New York City had recorded 234 total road deaths including pedestrians and bicyclists. That number also includes 115 car drivers, motorcyclists and passengers who have been killed – a 69% increase from the same period last year and the highest number of such deaths since 2006.

Pedestrians are more vulnerable to suffering catastrophic injuries in these types of accidents. They are more likely to suffer traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord trauma that may result in paralysis, multiple bone fractures, amputations, internal organ damage, etc. We have also recently seen a number of such collisions in New York City involving vehicles that are making turns at intersections.

These types of accidents are likely to increase if drivers are impaired, distracted or otherwise negligent (careless). Motorists have a duty of care to pedestrians, which means they are required to exercise caution when driving in areas where pedestrians may be present including at street intersections. New York laws require drivers to stop and yield the right of way to pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections. Drivers are required to exercise caution even where there are no crosswalks.
