A fiery car accident on the Belt parkway in Queens sent several people to the hospital the morning of July 5. According to a WABC news report, the crash occurred near Cross Bay Boulevard. Police said a vehicle driven by a 24-year-old man was traveling eastbound on the parkway when the driver failed to negotiate the roadway and struck the concrete divider. He then struck an SUV as well as another vehicle that were westbound.
All vehicles and occupants remained at the scene. Two people are reported in critical condition while four others suffered injuries and are said to be in stable condition. The investigation into the cause of this injury crash is ongoing. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who was affected by this crash. We wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Common Causes of Car Accidents
Car accidents occur for a variety of reasons. One of the leading factors is distracted driving, which includes texting, talking on the phone, eating, or adjusting the radio while behind the wheel. Speeding is another major cause, which typically involves drivers going above the speed limit or traveling too fast for road conditions, which means they have less time to react to hazards.
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs remains a serious problem and significantly impairs judgment and reaction times. Reckless or aggressive driving, including tailgating, frequent lane changes or ignoring traffic signals, also increases the likelihood of a crash. Weather conditions such as rain, fog or ice, can make roads slippery and reduce visibility, contributing to accidents if drivers fail to adjust their behavior. Fatigued driving can also be as dangerous as drunk driving, especially during late-night or long-distance trips.
The Role of Negligence (Carelessness) in Car Crashes
Negligence (carelessness) plays a central role in determining liability in car accidents. Legally, negligence occurs when a driver fails to exercise reasonable care, resulting in harm to others. This can include actions such as texting while driving, running a red light, speeding or failing to yield. When a driver is negligent (careless), they may be held financially responsible for the damages and injuries caused.
To prove negligence, four elements must be established: Duty of care, breach of that duty, causation and damages. All drivers have a duty to operate their vehicles safely. If that duty is breached and it directly causes an accident that results in injury or property damage, the negligent driver may be held liable.
Negligence is also key in personal injury claims, where victims seek compensation for medical bills, lost wages and benefits, and pain and suffering, etc. Clear evidence of negligence strengthens a victim’s ability to recover damages. An experienced car accident lawyer can help injured victims pursue maximum compensation for their losses by helping establish fault and liability in such cases.
