An MTA bus driver is in critical condition and 12 other passengers were injured in a bus accident in the Bronx the morning of Aug. 4. According to an NY1.com news report, the bus crash occurred on Boston Road and East Tremont Avenue when the MTA bus slammed into a pillar supporting an elevated subway line.
Neck and Back Injuries Reported
The bus driver, a 14-year employee, was transported to a local hospital as were 12 passengers aboard the bus, which included adults and children. The bus passengers were treated for neck and back pain and bruises, officials said. The bus driver was treated for a cardiac arrest at the scene of the incident.
Officials are looking into whether the medical emergency occurred before or after the collision. MTA authorities said the driver, like other MTA employees, had completed a medical examination when she joined the transit authority and continued to do so bi-annually. She had her most recent medical exam six months ago, officials said. None of the passengers suffered life-threatening injuries. The bus crash is still under investigation.
Steps to Take After a Bus Accident
Injured victims should take a number of steps in these types of cases in order to protect their rights. First, it is important they obtain a copy of the police report. Your personal injury lawyer can help you secure a copy of this report, which contains important details such as time, place, location of the incident, the parties involved and often, who was at fault.
Victims would be well advised to get prompt medical attention, treatment and care for their injuries. Bus accidents often tend to result in whiplash and other types of neck and back injuries, which might not fully manifest until days after the crash. However, it is important to get checked out by your doctor to determine the type of injury you have sustained and the kind of treatment you will need.
Getting prompt medical attention helps establish a record of the type of injuries you have sustained and the treatment you have received or need to receive for those injuries. It is also a good idea to collect as much evidence as possible from the scene of the crash including cell phone photos and videos and contact information for witnesses. It would also be in your best interest to immediately contact an experienced New York City bus accident lawyer who will be able to guide you through the claims process, fight for your rights and help you secure maximum compensation for your losses.
Contacting an Experienced Lawyer
Injured victims of bus accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in car accidents can seek compensation for damages such as lost future income, medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, etc. Bus companies — whether they are public or private carriers — owe a duty of care to their passengers. They have a legal obligation to transport passengers safely.
