Woman Killed in Long Island Pedestrian Accident

Pedestrian accidentIlona Kaydanov, 22, was killed in a pedestrian accident in Commack when she was jogging with her younger brothers the morning of Aug. 31. According to a Newsday report, the victim was jogging with her younger brothers Dennis Kaydanov, 20, and Joseph Kaydanov, 13, in a single file on northbound Harned Road shoulder when they were struck by a minivan. Ilona Kaydanov was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said. Her brothers were also transported to a local medical center for treatment and are expected to recover from their injuries, officials said.

The driver of the minivan remained at the scene. She was not charged pending an ongoing investigation. Officials are looking into what caused the crash, including how fast the driver was going. We offer our deepest condolences to the Kaydanov family for their tremendous loss and wish the injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Long Island Crash Statistics

According to Newsday’s analysis, Kaydanov was at least the 26th person on Long Island to die in August as the result of a vehicle crash. This count includes victims on foot, behind the wheel, in a passenger seat, while cycling or jogging. The newspaper’s analysis in 2021 found that Long Island roads are among New York State’s deadliest to walk or bike and that only few drivers involved in crashes fatally injuring pedestrians and bicyclists faced criminal charges.

Newsday also reports that there were 74,683 crashes on Long Island in 2022 — 35,748 in Suffolk and 38,935 in Nassau, according to preliminary statistics maintained by the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research. In those crashes, 154 people were killed and 13,533 were injured in Suffolk and 80 were killed and 14,514 were injured in Nassau.

Compensation for Damages

Pedestrian accidents typically prove costly for victims and their families, as they face significant expenses such as medical costs and expenses related to rehabilitation and ongoing care. These types of accidents also cause permanent injuries and disabilities that result in loss of earning capacity and/or necessitate round-the-clock nursing care. Often, pedestrian accidents result in deaths.

Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, lost future income, etc.

Pedestrian accident victims and their families should also remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one million dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
