Woman Killed in Brooklyn Bicycle Accident

April Reign, 32, was killed in a bicycle accident after a school bus struck her while making a turn at a Brooklyn intersection. According to a report in the New York Daily News, Reign was turning onto St. Marks Avenue off Eastern Parkway in Brownsville the morning of Feb. 4 when a school bus making a sharp right turn knocked her off her bike. Reign suffered severe trauma to her body with a broken neck and head injuries. A video of the crash showed that the bus ran Reign over, when she fell on the pavement.

Horrific Bicycle Crash

Another video of the bicycle accident obtained by the Daily News showed that the bus driver cut off Reign while turning right and knocked her off the e-bike. The driver then ran over Reign and sped away. He later returned to the scene thanks to a Good Samaritan who called 911 and waved down traffic to alert the driver of the crash.

Medics rushed her to a local hospital, but she succumbed to her critical injuries. The 48-year-old school bus driver was not immediately charged. Reign’s death marked the first cyclist fatality of 2022. Her family members said Reign was using her e-bike to commute even during the winter to save money and was eventually planning to use the bicycle to become a delivery worker and earn more income for her family.

We offer our deepest condolences to April Reign’s family for their tremendous loss. We will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

Surge in Traffic Deaths

While 2021 was the deadliest year for the city’s roadways in recent times, this year has been off to a worrisome start. Just a little over a month in 2022, the city has seen 19 deaths, which includes 12 pedestrians. According to the NYPD, pedestrian injuries are also up 16% so far this year with 600 pedestrians injured during the first month of 2022. That amounts to about 20 injured pedestrians each day.

According to Streetsblog.com, Eastern Parkway is one of the city’s wider roadways and remains dangerous in spite of a lower speed limit and off-road bike lane along part of its length. In 2021, there were 487 crashes on just the 3.4-mile stretch of Eastern Parkway between Grand Army Plaza and Atlantic Avenue, injuring 241 people including 20 bicyclists, 50 pedestrians and 171 motorists. Two pedestrians were killed — one in November and one in April. This year, eight of the 19 traffic fatalities have occurred in Brooklyn.

Last month, Mayor Eric Adams made a pledge to redesign 1,000 intersections across the city and make them safer for pedestrians as well as vigorously enforce pedestrian safety laws by using the NYPD to crack down on drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians who are using a crosswalk or intersection, and fail to stop at red lights and stop signs.
