A 33-year-old woman was critically injured in a pedestrian accident the afternoon of Nov. 25 after a driver jumped a curb and struck her. According to a News12 report, police said the 75-year-old male driver jumped the curb near Grand Street, striking two parked cars and a gate before crashing into the woman and a fire alarm call box. A witness said the vehicle was moving at an “alarming speed” given the traffic conditions. She said the victim tried to avoid the oncoming vehicle, but ended up getting pinned against a wall by the car.
Bystanders found the trapped woman and tried to help her, according to reports. Emergency crews transported the woman to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition. Police said her condition had stabilized. Police told News12 that they are still working to determine what caused the driver to lose control and veer into the sidewalk. No arrests have been made pending an official investigation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured victim, and we wish her the best for a quick and full recovery.
Pedestrian Accidents Can Cause Severe Injuries
Pedestrian accidents often result in some of the most severe injuries because people walking on the street have no physical protection against the impact of a vehicle. One of the most common and devastating outcomes is traumatic brain injury (TBI), which can occur even at low vehicle speeds and may lead to long-term cognitive or neurological impairment. Spinal cord injuries are also frequent, potentially causing paralysis, chronic pain or reduced mobility.
Many pedestrians suffer multiple fractures including broken legs, hips and ribs, which may require surgery and extended rehabilitation. Internal injuries such as organ damage or internal bleeding, can be life-threatening and may not be immediately visible at the accident scene. Additionally, severe soft-tissue injuries including deep lacerations and muscle or ligament damage, can have lasting effects on mobility and function. Because these injuries are often catastrophic, prompt medical attention and thorough follow-up care can be crucial.
Pedestrian accidents can also result in long-term or permanent disabilities due to the severity of the impact. Some victims develop chronic pain, cognitive impairments or neurological disorders that affect daily functioning and employment. Others may face partial or complete paralysis, loss of limb function or significant emotional trauma. These disabilities often require extensive rehabilitation, the need to use adaptive equipment or long-term care and support, making pedestrian accidents not only physically devastating but also financially and emotionally overwhelming for victims and their families.
