A man was injured in a bicycle accident the morning of Aug. 8 after he was struck by a delivery van on the Upper West Side, NYPD officials said. According to a report on Patch.com, the incident occurred at Columbus Avenue and West 95th Street. Police said that the bicyclist suffered head injuries and that the van’s driver remained at the scene of the crash. Police said the victim was taken to a local hospital. It is not clear if the driver of the delivery van is facing charges. The accident is under investigation, officials said. We hope the bicyclist’s injuries were not life-threatening and wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Recent Delivery Vehicle Accidents in NYC
Delivery van or truck collisions with cyclists in NYC have led to numerous tragic outcomes. A Citi Bike rider was fatally struck by a beer delivery truck in Midtown Manhattan in June 2024. In October 2023, a turning box truck killed a 56-year-old cyclist in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Also that year, on the Upper East Side, a fatal incident occurred when a delivery truck mounted the sidewalk, killing both a bicyclist and a pedestrian. In East New York in April 2024, a cyclist sustained serious injuries after being hit by a work truck making a turn. Delivery trucks and vans tend to pose significant risks to bicyclists — whether due to turns, curb encroachments or approach speeds — particularly on busy streets and intersections.
What to Do If You’ve Been Injured in a Delivery Van Accident
If you are a bicyclist injured in a delivery van accident in New York, it is important to first make sure you are safe. Call 911 immediately to request medical assistance and report the accident. Even if injuries seem minor, seek prompt medical evaluation because some injuries such as concussions or internal bleeding may not be immediately apparent.
If possible, gather evidence at the scene. Take photographs of your injuries, the van, its license plate, surrounding areas and any roadway hazards. Obtain contact information from the driver, their employer (if applicable) and witnesses. Request a copy of the police report number for your records. Do not discuss fault or make statements to the delivery company’s insurer. New York’s no-fault insurance laws may entitle you to certain benefits for medical expenses, but delivery vehicles may involve commercial insurance policies with different coverage and rules.
Contact an attorney experienced in NYC bicycle accident cases as soon as possible. They will be able to help you collect and preserve evidence, handle insurance communications and assess whether you are entitled to additional compensation for your injuries and losses. Be sure to document your recovery process with medical records, receipts and a personal injury journal.
Contact an Experienced Personal Injury Attorney
Accident cases involving delivery trucks or vans are more complex than standard car accidents. Large delivery companies often have powerful legal teams and insurers protecting their interests. You need someone on your side who understands how to investigate commercial vehicle crashes; deal with corporate insurers; preserve and obtain driver logs, dashcam footage and company records; and calculate your full monetary damages.
Injured victims of delivery van or delivery truck accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in truck accidents can seek compensation for damages such as lost future income, medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, etc.
