Two People Injured in Manhattan Pedestrian Accident

pedestrian accident attorneyTwo pedestrians were injured after a pickup truck jumped a curb and struck them in Manhattan’s Hamilton Heights. According to a WABC report, the pedestrian accident occurred the afternoon of Aug. 5 at West 148th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue. Surveillance video obtained by Eyewitness News shows a pickup truck plow into the two victims as they were walking along on the sidewalk at St. Nicholas Avenue between 148th and 149th streets. The pickup truck then slammed into the back of a parked van. The force of the impact shoved the van further into the street.

Witnesses said the truck came in so suddenly that the two victims did not have the time to get out of the way. WABC News reports that the incident occurred when a person in the pickup truck was teaching the woman who was driving how to park the truck in an empty spot when she confused the gas pedal for the brakes. Both remained at the scene. The investigation is still ongoing. We wish the injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Pedestrian Accidents in New York City

According to recent data, pedestrian accidents remain a serious concern in New York City. In 2023, the New York City Department of Transportation reported a total of 10,592 pedestrian crashes. Of these, 142 resulted in fatalities, marking a slight decrease from previous years but still highlighting ongoing safety challenges.

Efforts to improve pedestrian safety have been a priority, with initiatives including expanded crosswalks, increased traffic enforcement, and the implementation of Vision Zero, a program aimed at eliminating traffic-related deaths and serious injuries. Despite these measures, pedestrian accidents continue to be a critical issue, with many occurring in busy intersections and high-traffic areas.

Demographic data also indicates that vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and children, are disproportionately affected. For instance, individuals over 65 account for a substantial proportion of pedestrian fatalities. The city’s approach combines engineering improvements with public education campaigns to address these concerns and enhance pedestrian safety across the boroughs.

Injuries and Compensation

Pedestrian accidents often result in severe injuries for the victims. Unlike vehicle occupants, pedestrians have no physical protection in a collision, making them highly vulnerable to serious harm. Common injuries include fractures, head trauma, spinal injuries, and lacerations. Head injuries are particularly concerning, as they can result in long-term cognitive impairments or even fatalities.

The impact of these injuries extends beyond physical pain, affecting victims’ emotional well-being and financial stability due to medical bills and lost wages. Recovery can be a lengthy process, requiring extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation. In some cases, the injuries may lead to permanent disabilities, altering the victim’s quality of life.

Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, lost future income, etc.

Pedestrian accident victims and their families should remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one-million-dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
