Two Crashes Over Two Days in Manhattan Cause Fatalities and Injuries

Two Crashes Over Two Days in Manhattan

A driver careened into a food truck the morning of July 20, barely a day after a pedestrian and bicyclist were struck and killed at the same location in Manhattan’s Chinatown. According to an NBC News report, a driver lost control of his car slamming into a food truck at the same intersection where just a day earlier, a bicyclist and a woman sitting on a bench were fatally struck. A 20-year-old operating the food truck was treated at a nearby hospital for injuries.

Ongoing Investigation

The New York Times reported that early morning on July 19, a bicyclist and pedestrian were struck by a stolen rental car that jumped the curb and struck them on the sidewalk at the intersection of Canal Street and the Bowery. The 63-year-old woman was sitting on a metal bench when the vehicle hit her and the bicyclist. The driver of the vehicle and the passenger left the scene, but were found a block away and arrested by police. We offer our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased victims.

An employee who was working nearby told the Times that accidents near the Manhattan end of the bridge were common because cars come off the bridge too fast to safely make the turn north onto the Bowery. Citywide, pedestrian deaths have declined 19% during the first six months of 2025 compared with those in the same period last year, dropping from 63 fatalities to 51, according to the city’s Department of Transportation.

Holding Negligent (Careless) Drivers Accountable

Holding negligent drivers accountable is essential for ensuring justice and promoting safer roads. When a driver acts carelessly — whether by speeding, texting while driving or failing to obey traffic laws — and causes an accident, they can be held legally responsible for the damages they cause. Such accidents can cause catastrophic injuries and even lifelong disabilities. Victims of these accidents have the right to file personal injury lawsuits to recover compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, property damage, past and future pain and suffering, etc.

Proving negligence (carelessness) requires showing that the driver breached their duty of care and that this breach directly caused harm and the resulting damages. Legal accountability not only helps injured victims recover just compensation, but also sends a message that reckless driving has consequences. Insurance claims, civil lawsuits and sometimes even criminal charges can all play a role in holding negligent drivers responsible. It is also important to remember that leaving the scene of an injury or fatal car accident is a crime under New York law. Drivers are required to remain at the scene in the event of an injury crash, exchange information with other parties involved and cooperate with investigating officers.
