A man was seriously injured in a pedestrian accident after being hit by a milk truck whose driver ran a red light at the intersection. According to a news report in Streetsblog.org, the horrific video of the incident showed the driver of the milk truck traveling on Broadway in Elmhurst and blowing through a red light at the intersection of Baxter Street.
Dangerous Streets
The light had been red for at least two full seconds when the truck driver entered the intersection without slowing down based on video from another driver’s dash cam, Streetsblog reports. The footage shows the truck crashing into the pedestrian on the western side of the intersection. NYPD officials said the pedestrian was taken to a local hospital. No arrests were made or summonses issued. The investigation is ongoing.
According to Streetsblog, this has been a particularly deadly year on city streets. Through Oct. 14 this year, 209 people have died in traffic accidents in New York City, the most ever through this point of the year under Mayor Bill de Blasio. Streetsblog reports that the intersection of Broadway and Baxter where this pedestrian accident happened is particularly dangerous.
Streetblog’s analysis of city data shows that since January 2019, there have been 21 reported crashes in that one spot injuring one bicyclist, five pedestrians and four motorists. In Elmhurst, there have been 3,431 crashes since January 2019 including those involving 181 bicyclists, 282 pedestrians and 600 motorists. That amounts to more than three crashes every day in one neighborhood that is roughly one square mile in size.
