Sarah Perez, 18, was killed in a pedestrian accident in Queens involving a 16-year-old driver, who officials say, did not have a license. According to news reports, the fatal pedestrian collision occurred on Northern Boulevard the afternoon of Feb. 17. Officials say Perez was walking on the sidewalk in front of a tire shop at the corner of Northern Boulevard and 107th Street in Corona when the driver struck her with his 4,800-pound pickup truck as he entered the repair shop.
Fatal Head Injuries
Perez was knocked to the pavement and suffered severe head trauma.
Emergency personnel took her to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The teen driver remained at the scene and hasn’t been charged. Surveillance video shows the truck tires reversing off the sidewalk into the street and then quickly lurching forward before passersby rush over. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sarah Perez’s family members as they grieve this tragic loss.
Police say it is unclear if the 16-year-old had a learner’s permit and that he was alone in the car. The investigation into this case is ongoing, officials said. Streetsblog.org reports that the F-150 pickup truck associated with this fatal crash has been caught by city cameras for speeding in school zones three times since Sept. 28, including twice this year.
A camera-issued speeding ticket on Jan. 20 was issued just a few blocks away from the crash site on Northern Boulevard, which is notorious for injuries and collisions, based on the news report. Last year, there were 11 crashes on either side of the intersection where this crash took place, injuring seven motorists. Since 2017, 42 people have been injured at this location, Streetsblog.org reports. This most recent fatality highlights a pedestrian death crisis this year as well as a surge in all traffic accidents in New York City.
Laws Governing Underage Drivers
Those who are 16 years of age can get a learner’s permit to drive in New York City. However, they cannot get a driver’s license until six months after getting the permit and passing a road test. Their license would still be considered a “junior license” until they turn 18.
According to the DMV’s website, people with junior licenses cannot legally drive in New York City. The DMV also recommends that junior permit holders who plan to drive in New York City should delay their road test until their 18th birthday so they can gain more experience driving with older drivers in vehicles with dual controls and brakes.
