Teen Killed in Brooklyn Pedestrian Accident

Christian Antoine, 14, was killed in a pedestrian accident in Brooklyn after he was struck by a driver who officials say was speeding and unlicensed. According to a report in the New York Daily News, police charged 45-year-old Rayan Salmon with aggravated unlicensed vehicle operation after the crash the evening of Jan. 27. Officials said Salmon was driving an SUV heading west on Glenwood Road at an “unsafe speed” as he approached East 81st Street.

Ongoing Investigation

Pedestrian Accident LawyerA second vehicle, a pickup truck, was stopped at a stop sign on East 81st Street and started moving south into the intersection when the SUV barreled past two double-parked vehicles and into the intersection. The SUV struck the pickup truck and then spun counterclockwise and slammed into the teen. Medics rushed Christian to a local hospital. He succumbed to his injuries. His mother told the Daily News that the teen lived just a block away from where he was struck. The high school student had dreams of becoming a nurse, his family members said.

Neighbors said the intersection where this crash occurred is a dangerous one where many drivers disobey the stop sign. They are calling for a traffic light and crosswalk to keep pedestrians safe there. The investigation into this fatal pedestrian accident is ongoing. Our thoughts and prayers are with Christian Antoine’s family members, friends and community. We offer them our deepest condolences.

Vehicle Speed and Pedestrian Accident Injuries

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), speeding significantly magnifies the severity of injuries sustained in pedestrian and bicycle accidents. The force of impact escalates as vehicles travel at higher speeds, causing more extensive and life-threatening injuries to the victims. Speeding reduces the time available for drivers to react and for pedestrians to evade oncoming vehicles, making collisions more forceful.

Speeding drivers can lose control of the vehicle, which in turn can result in serious or even catastrophic or fatal injuries for pedestrians who lack the protective features that are available to occupants of vehicles. Pedestrian accidents have the potential to result in injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord trauma, broken bones and internal organ damage. Victims in these types of accidents often suffer severe trauma and long-term disabilities that impact their quality of life and place a substantial financial burden on his or her family.

Compensation for Victims

Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, lost future income, etc.

Pedestrian accident victims and their families should also remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one-million-dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
