Terah Saucier, 17, was struck and killed as he was attempting to cross Kings
Highway at the intersection of Avenue K the evening of Feb. 12 in Flatlands, Brooklyn. According to an AMNY.com report, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred when the victim was crossing the busy road less than a block away from his home and was involved in a collision with a westbound sedan driven by a19-year-old man.
Paramedics found Saucier lying in the roadway with severe injuries and brought him to Kings County Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver remained at the scene. Police have not issued summonses or made an arrest pending the investigation. AMNY reports that photos from the scene show the car’s front window smashed in on the driver’s side.
We offer our deepest condolences to Terah Saucier’s family members for their tragic loss. They will be in our thoughts and prayers.
Pedestrian Deaths in the City
According to NYC Crash Mapper, there have been eight crashes that left 12 people injured or dead since 2011 at the intersection of Avenue K and the busy Kings Highway. This busy intersection in southern Brooklyn has cars also crossing from Troy Avenue. The Department of Transportation recently added painted pedestrian medians lined with plastic flappers to break up the long crosswalk traversing Kings Highway in an effort to calm traffic.
Saucier is the second person under 18 to die in traffic accidents in the city in under a week. On Feb. 9, a driver reversed into and critically wounded a 5-year-old boy in nearby Midwood and another motorist, just hours later, struck and killed a 10-year-old girl in Far Rockaway, Queens.
Liability Issues
Pedestrian accidents have the potential to cause major injuries or even fatalities. Some of the most common causes of pedestrian accidents include driving at excessive speeds, inattention, driving while distracted and failing to yield to a pedestrian. Drivers are required under the law to exercise care and caution and look out for pedestrians walking at intersections.
When the pedestrian accident involves a commercial or delivery truck, victims or families may be able to seek compensation from the truck driver and also his or her employer and the truck’s owner. An experienced New York pedestrian accident lawyer will be able to provide victims and their families with more information about pursuing their rights and seeking maximum compensation in such cases.
