Several People Injured in Multi-Vehicle Collisions in New York

Auto accident lawyerTwo, people including a 75-year-old woman, suffered critical injuries in a car accident when their vehicle overturned in a seven-car collision on the Belt Parkway the night of Nov. 18. According to a Pix11 news report, the pileup was triggered by the driver of a vehicle who lost control and sideswiped another car near Knapp Street in Brooklyn. That car was then hit by another vehicle, which overturned into oncoming traffic on the opposite side of Belt Parkway.

Separate Pileups Cause Major Injuries

Another car then struck the overturned vehicle, and two people in that car — a 75-year-old woman and a man — suffered severe head and body injuries. They were transported to a hospital in critical condition. Officials said three other vehicles crashed into each other in an attempt to avoid the vehicles involved in the earlier accident. Three other people suffered non-life-threatening injuries as a result. The driver of the vehicle who triggered the collision fled the scene on foot and remained at large, police said.

On the morning of Nov. 19, two people were critically injured in yet another seven-car pileup on the Long Island Expressway. That incident occurred early morning at the 48th Street exit in Queens, FDNY officials said. Five other victims were injured in that crash. The investigations into these major injury collisions are ongoing.

Steps to Take After a Multi-Vehicle Collision

A multi-vehicle collision can be chaotic and overwhelming, but taking certain steps immediately following the incident can help protect your rights:

  • Ensure safety: Check for injuries and, if possible, move to a safe location away from oncoming traffic. Turn on hazard lights and use warning devices if available to alert other drivers.
  • Call emergency services: Dial emergency services (911 or a local emergency number) to report the accident. Request medical assistance if anyone in your vehicle or the other car is injured.
  • Exchange information: Collect details from other drivers involved, including names, contact information, insurance details, and vehicle license plate numbers. Avoid discussing fault or liability at the scene.
  • Document the scene: If it is safe to do so, take photos or videos of the accident scene, including vehicle positions, damage, road conditions, traffic signals, and any visible injuries. This documentation can be crucial for insurance claims or if you file a case.
  • Gather witness information: If there are witnesses, ask for their contact information. Their testimony can help corroborate your statements and substantiate your claim.
  • Seek medical attention: Even if injuries seem minor initially, it’s essential to seek medical evaluation. Some injuries may be internal and have serious consequences.
  • Keep records: Maintain a record of your medical treatments and expenses related to the accident as well as communications with insurance companies, and any other relevant documentation.
