A driver and 21 children were injured in a school bus accident in Spring Valley, a suburb north of New York City. According to a report in the New York Post, the bus crash occurred after a bus operated by the Jewish Ribnitzer schools struck two parked cars, dragging them over a hill before crashing into a home on Southgate Drive.
Ongoing Bus Accident Investigation
The bus driver and 21 children were extricated from the wreckage and six victims were transported to a local pediatric trauma center. Two children were reported to be in serious, but not life-threatening condition. Two other children were treated for various injuries as well. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. No arrests or citations have been reported.
One mother told reporters that her 10-year-old son was transported to the hospital, but only suffered bruising on his leg and no serious injuries. Other children with relatively minor injuries were evaluated by paramedics and then released back into the school’s care. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured victims of this crash. We wish them all a speedy and complete recovery.
In such cases, it is important that a comprehensive investigation is conducted into the cause of the bus crash. There are a number of potential causes for a bus accident including bus driver negligence (carelessness) or inattention, driving under the influence, distracted driving, malfunctioning part or equipment, failure to maintain the bus properly, etc. Depending on the cause of the crash, one or more parties can be held liable for the injuries, damages and losses that occur.
Steps to Take After a Bus Accident
Injured victims should take a number of steps in these types of cases in order to protect their rights. First, it is important to obtain a copy of the police report. Your personal injury lawyer can help you secure a copy of this report, which contains important details such as time, place, location of the incident, the parties involved and often, who was at fault.
Victims would be well advised to get prompt medical attention, treatment and care for their injuries. This establishes a record of the type of injuries they sustained and the treatment they received for those injuries. It is also a good idea to collect as much evidence as possible from the scene of the crash including cell phone photos and videos and contact information for witnesses. Immediately contact an experienced New York City bus accident lawyer who will be able to remain on your side, fight for your rights and help you secure maximum compensation for your losses.
Contacting an Experienced Lawyer
Injured victims of bus accidents may seek compensation from the bus company and/or other responsible parties for damages including medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones can seek compensation for damages as well by filing a wrongful death claim. Bus accidents have the potential to cause severe or even catastrophic injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord trauma, multiple broken bones, internal organ damage, facial and eye injuries, etc.
