A 41-year-old man, who had been critically injured in a pedestrian accident in Queens last month, has died, police said. According to a report on Streetsblog.org, a truck driven by a 61-year-old man collided with the victim early morning on May 19 at Hook Creek Boulevard near 135th Road. The pedestrian suffered severe body trauma and was transported to an area hospital where he died June 11, officials said. The driver remained at the scene and has not been charged yet. We offer our deepest condolences to the victim’s family. They will be in our thoughts and prayers.
Possible Dangerous Roadway
Streetsblog previously reported that a speed camera on Hook Creek Boulevard issued more than 600 tickets in fiscal year 2021, which amounts to about two a day. The crash also occurred within the confines of City Council District 31. Transportation Alternatives, a traffic safety advocacy group has consistently pointed out how dangerous this particular area is. Just in the first quarter of 2023, the district had six road deaths — the most of any Council district in that period.
While the district has fewer than 2% of city residents, it accounted for more than 10% of all fatalities during that quarter. District 31 also had nearly two times the fatality rate per 10,000 residents than the second-most-dangerous council district. District 31 also led all districts for road fatalities in 2021, Streetsblog reported. Last year, the district led all others with 10 road deaths, according to Transportation Alternatives.
Compensation for Injuries and Damages
Truck versus pedestrian accidents have the potential to result in catastrophic injuries or fatalities. Pedestrians may suffer injuries including traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, broken bones, internal organ damage, internal bleeding, limb amputations, lacerations, etc. A number of these accidents also often result in fatalities.
Victims and families typically end up facing significant expenses after such accidents including mounting medical costs that result from emergency transportation, hospitalization, surgeries, rehabilitation, etc. These types of accidents can cause permanent injuries and disabilities that result in loss of earning capacity or in requiring round-the-clock nursing care. All of these damages can add up to millions of dollar.
Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, lost future income, etc.
Pedestrian accident victims and their families should also remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one million dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
