Queens Pedestrian Accident Involves Cement Truck

A 60-year-old man was severely injured in a pedestrian accident after he was struck by a cement truck while crossing the street in Queens. According to an ABC7 news report, the collision occurred near Highland Avenue and Parsons Boulevard in the Jamaica section the morning of Nov. 17. The victim was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. The cement driver remained at the scene. There were no other reports of injuries. The accident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed yet. Our thoughts and prayers are with this injured pedestrian. We wish him the very best for a quick and full recovery.

Pedestrian Collisions Involving Larger Vehicles

Pedestrian AccidentWhen pedestrians get struck by large vehicles such as cement trucks, the resulting injuries can be catastrophic or even fatal. The sheer size and weight of these trucks, combined with their limited maneuverability, pose a significant risk to pedestrians sharing the road or crossing streets. Victims often sustain serious injuries, including broken bones, internal injuries, spinal cord damage, traumatic brain injuries.

The design of cement trucks, with their high chassis and large blind spots, creates challenges for drivers to have a clear view of their surroundings. Factors including driver fatigue, distraction, or reckless driving contribute to accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles.

These types of injury collisions have enormous consequences including an emotional and psychological impact on victims and their families. Recovery from severe injuries can be lengthy, requiring extensive medical treatment, rehabilitation, and potentially lifelong care. Families are left facing the financial burden of medical expenses and lost wages, which add to the emotional stress and trauma caused by the incident.

Negligence (carelessness) in Pedestrian Accidents

Negligence (carelessness) is often a factor in large trucks crashes. Drivers failing to exercise reasonable care, such as speeding, distracted driving (e.g., phone use), or disregarding traffic signals, significantly heighten the risk to pedestrians as well as other road users. In addition, inadequate maintenance or poorly trained drivers contribute to accidents. Please remember, if negligent (careless) hiring or employee retention had a role in the crash then the employer may be held accountable.

Lack of pedestrian safety measures at street intersections may also contribute to these types of incidents. Inadequate infrastructure, poorly marked crosswalks, or insufficient signage increase the likelihood of accidents.

Compensation for Victims

Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, lost future income, etc.

Pedestrian accident victims and their families should also remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one-million-dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
