Queens Moped Rider Killed by School Bus

Moped accidentA 43-year-old man was killed after his moped was struck by a school bus at a dangerous Queens intersection. According to Streetsblog.org, the bus driver was headed east on Queens Boulevard in the right lane of the inner roadway when he crossed Jackson Avenue with the green light and struck the moped driver. The impact of the collision was so intense that it knocked the man off his moped and onto the ground. Our deepest condolences go out to the family members of the deceased victim.

Dangerous Intersection

Streetsblog says that the corner of Queens Boulevard and Jackson Avenue, which was the site of this deadly crash, is a jumble of multi-lane roadways beneath elevated train tracks, which contribute to reduced visibility. Since 2020, that intersection has seen 103 crashes causing 47 injuries — including 10 to bicyclists, four to pedestrians and 33 to motor vehicle occupants, according to statistics compiled by CrashMapper.

This year has been particularly a bloody year for the city in terms of crashes with the highest number of bicyclists killed since the city started keeping record. In just the first four months of 2023, 11 bicyclists have been killed. Two bicyclists had died as of this time last year, according to the city’s Department of Transportation. The number of people killed on motorized devices like scooters and mopeds, which DOT characterizes as “other motorized,” is also on track to set a new record although officials only began compiling those statistics in 2021.

Five riders on non-e-bike motorized devices have been killed so far this year, according to city statistics compared to three during the same time period in 2022 and one in 2021. City officials are calling on the NYCDOT to act and make the area where this most recent moped crash occurred safer for all street users. Council member Julie Won (D-Long Island City) tweeted that DOT “must take immediate action to redesign this intersection to prevent further injuries and death from happening.”

Accidents at Street Intersections

There are a number of factors that lead to a street intersection collision between cars and mopeds, bicyclists or pedestrians. Many of these accidents tend to happen because of a driver who is negligent or careless behind the wheel. Often, the operators of the smaller vehicles are hit by drivers who are distracted, speeding or fail to yield the right of way. Some drivers also enter into bike lanes putting bicyclists in grave danger.

Injured victims of moped accidents and pedestrian accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as lost future income, medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, etc.

Pedestrian accident victims and their families should also remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one million dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
