Pedestrian Injured in Manhattan Hit-and-Run Accident

A 29-year-old man was injured in a pedestrian accident in Manhattan near Bryant Park after a speeding car left the roadway and drove onto a crowded sidewalk. According to a CBS New York news report, the collision occurred the evening of June 5 near 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue. A newsstand’s security camera captured a part of the incident and a witness said the driver of a red sedan veered off the street and entered the sidewalk where many pedestrians were standing.

Police said the 29-year-old victim was injured after being hit by the vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital where he remained in stable condition. The driver who struck the pedestrian fled the scene and officials are still looking for the hit-and-run driver and the vehicle. We are relieved to hear that the victim did not suffer life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover. We wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Reckless Driving and Pedestrian Accidents

Nationwide, there has been a reported increase in pedestrian fatalities and injuries because of a spike in reckless driving and speeding on the roadways. Crashes have killed more than 6,700 pedestrians in 2020, up about 5% from the estimated 6,412 the year before, according to statistics from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).

The GHSA states that based on vehicle miles traveled, the pedestrian fatality rate jumped about 21% in 2020 even though people drove less during the year when the coronavirus pandemic peaked. This upward trend in pedestrian accidents, injuries and deaths continued in 2021 as drivers still engaged in negligent (careless) behavior, particularly speeding and failure to yield to pedestrians.

Under New York law, it is illegal to leave the scene of an injury or fatal crash. Often, we find that victims of hit-and-run accidents or those who have lost loved ones in hit-and-run collisions are suddenly burdened with significant medical expenses and other related costs. If you have been injured in a hit-and-run crash, it is important that you take a number of steps including filing a police report, gathering evidence from the scene and getting prompt medical attention, etc. You should also contact an experienced New York City hit-and-run lawyer promptly.

Compensation for Injuries

Pedestrian accidents have the potential to result in major injuries or even fatalities. Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as lost future income, medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, etc.

The driver involved and the vehicle owner in a hit-and-run collision can be held financially liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused. Such drivers can be held financially responsible whether or not they are arrested and/or charged. If a hit-and-run driver has injured you, please remember that you can seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy (even though the driver has not been identified) or through a quasi-state agency if there is no motor vehicle in the victim’s household. Our law firm recovered $2,000,000 (two million dollars) in a hit-and-run accident.
