Mohammed Rahman, 67, was killed in a pedestrian accident in the Bronx, after officials say he was struck by an impaired motorist in the Castle Hill section. According to AMNY.com, Rahman was hit while crossing Castle Hill Avenue between Hermany and Turnbull Avenues the night of Sept. 25. Police said the driver was heading north on Castle Hill at the time of the collision. The victim was thrown to the ground and suffered a traumatic head injury before being pronounced dead by emergency personnel, officials said.
The 27-year-old driver remained at the scene. Officials determined he was impaired by marijuana and opiates at the time of the crash. Victor Ramos was charged with vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and failing to yield to a pedestrian. This fatal pedestrian accident took place just a block away from where a 68-year-old woman was killed by a hit-and-run school bus driver in 2019. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family members of Mohammad Rahman for their tragic loss.
Seniors and Pedestrian Fatalities in NYC
According to the New York City Department of Transportation’s (NYCDOT) 2022 report, senior citizens represent less than 15% of New York City’s population, but more than 45% of pedestrian fatalities. The agency has updated its Senior Pedestrian Zones throughout the city after the report’s findings. The updated zones account for 19% of the citywide senior population, but 31% of citywide senior pedestrian fatalities or severe injuries and 33% of citywide senior pedestrian injuries.
The study also showed that while senior citizens are not struck more frequently, their injuries tend to be more severe. Senior pedestrian fatalities are also more likely to occur close to home and in the middle of the day. The report notes that more seniors are injured and killed in bicycle accidents rather than pedestrian accidents. A greater number of older Asian New Yorkers are killed in traffic accidents than Black, white or Latino New Yorkers in the same age category, according to DOT, likely because of densely populated older Asian communities in neighborhoods such as Chinatown, Sunset Park and Flushing where more people tend to walk rather than travel by car.
Injuries and Damages
Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, lost future income, etc.
Pedestrian accident victims and their families should also remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one million dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
