NJ Transit Bus Accident Injures More Than Two Dozen People

Transit Bus Accident Injures

More than two dozen people were injured after a New Jersey Transit bus rear-ended another bus near the Port Authority Bus Terminal the morning of July 24. According to a report in the New York Post, the bus accident occurred at the intersection of West 41st Street and Dyer Avenue. The two buses collided on Ramp 96, which leads from the Lincoln Tunnel to Port Authority, officials said. In all, 29 people suffered non-life-threatening injuries. All but two of those victims were hospitalized for their injuries, which FDNY officials said, included musculoskeletal injuries as well as neck and back injuries.

One woman, Destiny Destra, told The Post that her 69-year-old mother, Desiree Dyre, who was a passenger in the rear and was left with a concussion and arm injuries. Destra said her mother was “still in a lot of pain.” Another female passenger told the news outlet that her bus was hit from behind and that she was experiencing neck pain. This bus accident comes just three weeks after three buses crashed at Port Authority, forcing the terminal to shut down during the morning rush hour. The investigation into this recent bus accident is ongoing. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who was affected. We wish them a speedy and complete recovery.

Common Musculoskeletal Injuries in Bus Crashes

Bus accidents can result in a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries due to the size of these vehicles, lack of seat belts and the force of impact during collisions or sudden stops. Passengers, drivers and pedestrians involved in bus crashes may suffer from sprains, strains, fractures and dislocations. Whiplash, a common neck injury, occurs when the head is violently jerked back and forth, straining the muscles and ligaments.

Back injuries are also frequent, particularly herniated discs and lower back strains, which can cause long-term pain and limited mobility. Shoulder injuries, such as rotator cuff tears or dislocations, may occur when a person braces for impact or is thrown against a hard surface. Broken bones, especially in the arms, wrists and legs, are common in more severe crashes or rollovers.

These injuries may not always be immediately apparent, making it essential for victims to seek prompt medical evaluation after a bus accident. Early diagnosis and treatment, including physical therapy or surgery, can help prevent long-term complications.

What Steps Should Injured Bus Passengers Take?

If you’re a passenger injured in a bus accident, the steps you take immediately afterward can protect your health and strengthen your personal injury case. First and foremost, seek medical attention, even if injuries seem minor at the time. Some symptoms, such as those from whiplash or internal injuries, may not appear right away. A prompt medical evaluation ensures your injuries are documented and treated early.

Report the accident to the bus driver or transit authority, and if possible, get a copy of the incident report. Collect crucial information including the bus number, route and details about the driver and bus company. If other vehicles were involved, try to gather the names and insurance details of all parties. Take photos of the accident scene, visible injuries and any damage.

Obtain contact information from other passengers or witnesses who can corroborate your account. Avoid giving recorded statements to insurance companies until you have spoken to a personal injury attorney. Bus accident claims can be complex, often involving public transit authorities or multiple parties. An experienced bus accident lawyer can help you understand your rights and take prompt action, which can help maximize compensation in your case.
