New York Truck Accident Raises Questions About Amazon’s Safety Record

The drivers of two vehicles were killed and four others were injured in a fiery truck accident near Albany. The deadly collision involving an Amazon truck once again raised concerns about the retail giant’s safety record on the road. According to a report in the Albany Times-Union, the crash occurred the morning of April 6 on a stretch of the Thruway between Exit 24 and Exit 25. One of the drivers killed in the crash was identified as 33-year-old Brian M. Harper of Rotterdam.

Troopers have not yet filed charges against the driver of the Freightliner tractor-trailer, a 53-year-old Boston man. State Police said the truck driver was unable to avoid eastbound traffic that backed up during the morning commute. It is not clear why the driver could not bring the truck to a stop before impact and whether it was owned by Amazon or by one of its third-party delivery companies.

Amazon’s Safety Record Under Scrutiny

The crash has cast a spotlight on Amazon’s transportation safety record, which the Times-Union says, includes a string of fatal crashes very similar to this New York truck accident. The newspaper’s research shows that since 2019, there have been more than 70 traffic accident lawsuits filed in state Supreme Court in New York against Amazon Logistics, the network of third-party delivery companies that handle its deliveries. Almost all of those cases were filed in New York or Long Island.

This year alone, the Times-Union reports that there have been 24 motor vehicle lawsuits filed against Amazon Logistics in New York City. Most of these incidents involved Amazon van drivers hitting other vehicles, and some involving Amazon trucks hitting pedestrians and motorcyclists. The lawsuits typically allege reckless driving.

The number of traffic accident lawsuits against Amazon have also increased nationwide. Amazon Prime trucks operating through Amazon Logistics has been named a defendant in at least 119 injury lawsuits filed in 35 states in 2021, Bloomberg News reported in November. Critics have said Amazon should be held liable for these crashes, which have also involved smaller delivery vans.
